Modrom with Kitiera
Modrom is short for Modern Romani. The name reflects its true nature: a "gypsy" dance. The name also reflects the emotionally charged aspect of the form, where musicality and theatrical delivery are as important as any other component of technique. It is foremost a blend of Egyptian raqs sharqi, Romani, and modern jazz dance. "Mandara" is a choreography that tells a story of a journey filled with anguish, longing, and prayers answered. This choreography is influenced by Odissi (classical Indian) dance.
Kitiera is originally from Lexington, Kentucky and has been belly dancing since the age of 12. She is currently level 2 certified, a teacher at the Salimpour School and a member of the Repertoire Ensemble presented by Suhaila Salimpour.
Saturday, November 22nd
Chiftitelli with Rashid
Choreographed in Rashid's unique style to a vintage Ozel Turkbas arrangement, this dance is a reflection of cabaret taxim from the 1970s.
Under the tutelage of dance pioneer, Jamila Salimpour, Rashid immersed himself in Arabic dance at age sixteen. He vigorously studied Middle Eastern dance as a performer, anthropologist and historian. Rashid quickly became a principal dancer with Bal Anat and has been a contributing artist to the Salimpour School(s) for over thirty years. Featured on Suhaila Salimpour's "Sheherezade" and "Solo Show" DVDs, Rashid continues his work as a teacher, choreographer, performer and artistic consultant with the Suhaila Salimpour School of Dance.
